Last Resort to Real Results: How OB’s Executive-Level Approach Delivered More Than Therapy

Mar 19, 2026 | ABA, Diagnosis, Integrated Services, Milestones, Social Skills, Speech

When every other child is talking, laughing, and hitting milestones, but your own struggles to even speak, the silence feels loud.

For Silvia, watching her son, James, fall further behind his peers was both heartbreaking and terrifying. By age 2, he hadn’t started speaking, but every avenue she explored for ABA support felt confusing, inconsistent, or unavailable.

Then, Optimal Beginnings brought an executive-level approach that changed everything.

From the application process to James speaking more and more words, the team’s transparency, advocacy, and structure gave Silvia the clarity, ease, and real results she was searching for. Keep reading to see how OB made a difference in James and his family’s growth.

Facing a Growing Gap

Before his diagnosis, Silvia noticed a lot of signs in her son, James, early on in his toddler years.

He wasn’t speaking, refused to sit calmly with a group of peers, and had an obsession with spinning random objects that weren’t meant to be spun.

Because of his early speech delays, he qualified for the PEP program for infants and toddlers, but despite this early support, he wasn’t making the progress Silvia expected. At a neurotypical daycare, she noticed the gap between his peers was getting wider. As the other kids were talking more and more, James was not.

Between ages 2 and 4, much of their journey was muddled by the pandemic, when preschool classes were still held online. Although they tried this less traditional form of education, alongside speech therapy and OT through the school, it was not done or planned with intention.

In June 2022 at age 4 years and 11 months, James received his official autism diagnosis.

To jumpstart his progress, Silvia called around to more than a dozen local providers for ABA therapy and ended up landing on the only option available: Optimal Beginnings.

Finding Home at OB

Initially, Optimal Beginnings was a last resort for Silvia and her family.

It was simply the only option available in the summer for ABA therapy. They were able to squeeze him in, so they started on with two and a half hours of social skills.

Not knowing where to start or what to look for in terms of helping her child, Silvia was grateful for the opportunity (even with a limited schedule at the time) because it meant they could target smaller skills.

Today, Silvia says it’s one of the best decisions they could have made.

“Later on we realized that we actually had it really good and it was worth staying and not switching to any other ABA therapy groups.”

A Refreshing Approach: OB’s Executive-Level Service and Care

When Silvia and her family first started seeking support, they quickly realized that not all ABA programs operate the same.

Other programs or public school experiences often felt vague or performative, with updates that didn’t reflect real progress. Silvia mentioned it often felt like lip service—or even a kind of “friendly lying”— by saying James was making improvements, but she didn’t see him bridging the gap with his neurotypical peers as they continued to advance.

“Basically everybody was saying in his public school for preschool that he was making improvements and yet I did not see the improvements.”

At Optimal Beginnings, though, it wasn’t just ABA therapy that made the difference — It was the executive-level approach to providing a more personalized and seamless experience for her family. Three things stood out the most to her:

1. Ease of Process: From the start, Silvia was impressed with the process of getting James and her family onboarded. Optimal Beginnings operated efficiently on a tight timeline, with a highly competent staff focused on moving the process forward without unnecessary delays. Every step—from the application to understanding waitlist and availability—was explained clearly, giving Silvia confidence and peace of mind.

She appreciated the guidance of the team, especially her first BCBA, Melanie Fernandez, who answered any questions and requests without judgement, so that she never felt silly or wrong for asking.

“I just appreciate that they had a lot of patience with me when I didn’t know any better.”

2. Transparency & Clear Communication: As a progress and results-focused parent, Silvia values OB’s process of communicating with one another.

Unlike other programs she’d experienced, OB clearly communicates expectations for both child and parent, making it easier for families to stay engaged and proactive. The team is thorough, direct, and refreshingly blunt, focusing on measurable progress rather than sugar-coating updates or offering vague reassurance.

“I think it’s really hard to hand-hold parents if they’re too busy. The more initiative you take as a parent, the more that OB is able to help you and the more OB staff can work with you.”

Silvia emphasized how Melanie Fernandez’s ability to break down complicated, nebulous challenges into clear, actionable steps has allowed Silvia to continue applying strategies on her own, helping both James and her daughter progress and problem-solve at home on weekends.

3. Stellar Executive-Level Team: One of the biggest positives Silvia has seen is how the  company is run from top to bottom. From the leadership of Dr. Dana down to the incredible staff, their executive-level approach to service makes the entire program run like a well-oiled machine.

She also appreciates the creativity and variety of approaches OB has tried with parent services—even when not every experiment is a winner, they’ve learned what works.

Gaps to Gains: How OB Helped the Whole Family Grow

The first signs of progress came within just a week or two of being with OB.

James began speaking more words and engaging in simple back-and-forth communication, even if it was just one-word responses. On drives to his summer social skills sessions, he would frequently mention Peppa Pig toys he played with and recall his first RBT, Sabrina.

“The fact that he mentioned Sabrina, Peppa Pig often, even though it’s just one or two words in the car, happily as we’re driving down, told me that he looked forward to and enjoyed his time at Optimal Beginnings.”

James also started demonstrating awareness of his surroundings and directions, frequently citing the different possible destinations when driving in a certain area or towards a building or location, especially on 495 and Route 190 on River Road where Optimal Beginnings was originally located.

Aside from applying practices at home, Silvia found OB’s decluttering support especially valuable for her as a parent. While the team doesn’t physically declutter her home, they guide her in organizing and structuring the environment, giving her the clarity to help her children learn routines.

With this foundation, she’s been able to incorporate speech therapy sessions and other practices at home. Even virtual support has been a huge payoff, benefiting both her and her children.

Taking these initiatives as a parent has been a key part of James’ growth. In fact, she believes in being clear, delegating, and stepping up for your child’s success is imperative.

“Kids are only going to be as lazy as parents will allow them to be. So you should never underestimate your child. You should always, always expect them to be more and do more and not overestimate them by expecting a lot.”

This mindset is an important reminder of how central parents are as an inspiration and motivation for their children’s growth in independence.

James’s Bright Future at Optimal Beginnings

For Silvia, the journey with Optimal Beginnings has been as much about guidance and partnership as it has been about James’ progress.

The structure, transparency, and executive-level approach of the team has given her the clarity and confidence to take initiative of his growth beyond our offices.

“I’m so happy that Optimal Beginnings was the first choice that was available because it would have ended up being our first choice.”
